JGS Lifecare Music and Memory Services

Music Key to Tuning In Lost Memories

The JGS Lifecare Music & Memory Program uses digital music technology and personalized playlists to improve the quality of life for people with  cognitive impairments.

Rooted in extensive neuroscience research, MUSIC & MEMORYsm couples modern digital technology with the therapeutic benefit of music.  The music triggers memories that can help lower resistance to care, alleviate agitation and increase socialization. Participants may sing along, dance, socialize and talk more after listening to their playlist, enabling them to feel more like themselves. Relationships among staff, residents and family are deepened and everyone benefits from a calmer, more supportive social environment.

The music therapy program is currently being used in 700 skilled nursing facilities across the country. JGS Lifecare is one of just two western Massachusetts elder care facilities certified as a provider of the program, and the only certified Hampden County nursing home.

Currently, the program is available on a limited* basis to residents of the Leavitt Family Jewish Home, Wernick Adult Day Health Care Center, and Ruth’s House Assisted Living Residence.

To donate your gently-used iPod, or to make a donation to help purchase new units and music to serve all residents, please contact Susan Kimball Halpern, vice president of Philanthropy at 413.567.3949, ext. 1612 or email shalpern@jewishgeriatric.org.
